Anxiety Therapy in 7 Simple Steps

Anxiety therapy varies greatly because not all cases of anxiety are the same and people will respond to treatment differently. In general, there are certain things that are involved in treatment for all patients. The following 7 steps explain some of the different approaches that are commonly used in therapy for anxiety.

Step One: Identify Thoughts

A common problem with anxiety is that a person sees situations as something to be afraid of. They see danger where no real danger exists. That is why one step in anxiety therapy is identifying what you feel and learning why you feel that way. It is common for a person to have an anxiety attack and not be able to figure out why since the symptoms are so extreme. By breaking the attack down and getting to what triggered it, there is hope to be able to use that to prevent future attacks.

Step Two: Challenge your Thoughts

After identifying your negative thoughts you should try to challenge them. Find out why you feel the way you do. Analyze why you have these thoughts and feelings. Try to challenge yourself to think differently.

Step Three: Replace Negative Thoughts

The next step is to take those negative thoughts and replace them with positive ones. Rationalize the situation and teach yourself to go through rationalizing your fear and turning it around.

Step Three: Learn to Relax

Over coming negative thought patterns is not simple. It helps to have skills that you can use to get through the process of overcoming anxiety. That is why part of anxiety therapy is learning techniques to help you relax. This can include learning muscle relaxation and breathing techniques.

Step Four: Create a Plan to Overcome Fears

For many people there are specific situations that bring on an attack that is why part of anxiety therapy involves creating a plan on how you will overcome that fear. The plan uses a step by step process to progress you through exposure to your fear until you finally attack the situation and overcome the fear.

Step Five: Work Through All the Therapy Steps

In order for the therapy to work you have to keep working through the different steps. You have to stick with anxiety therapy and make sure that you are focused on taking control over your disorder.

Step Six: Make Changes as Needed

Your therapy for anxiety has to be customized to your needs. You need to work with your doctor and therapist to ensure that your therapy is working for you. There may need to be changes made to make the anxiety therapy more effective. If you see something is not working then change it. You simply have to stay on top of things and seek out things that work and get rid of those that don't.

Anxiety therapy happens over time. There is no instant cure. You have to work together with your doctors to find something that helps you. With time and hard work you should be able to find the therapy that works best for you and enables you to have control over anxiety and panic.
